Tom van de Meer (Postdoc)After my BSc and MSc studies at Wageningen University and a PhD at the VIB in Gent, Belgium (Laboratory of Oxidative Stress Signalling, Prof. Frank van Breusegem), I returned to the nest of the Lab of Plant Physiology in April 2019, aiming to find the elusive sodium sensing mechanism in plants. During my PhD, I studied the plant’s intracellular response to oxidative stress using a chemical genetics approach. When the plant encounters detrimental stress conditions, H2O2 will act as a signalling molecule and activate the defence responses. In the ‘Roots in Salt’ group I will again use a chemical genetics approach to find small molecules that reduce the response of Arabidopsis to high sodium soil content and identify the target proteins, which explain the intracellular response to salt stress.
