Plants respond to salt stress in a complex manner. So far, many studies have focused on understanding how plants respond and adapt to salt. However, to date, the mechanism responsible for triggering plant responses to salinity remain unknown. Previously, it was believed that osmotic changes triggered early salt signaling responses. However, recent data reveal that plants respond immediately and specifically to Na+. Although several candidate Na+-sensors have been proposed the way plants sense Na+ is still elusive. My project now aims to elucidate how plants sense Na+. Understanding how plants detect Na+ and the molecular mechanisms behind this Na+-sensor will increase our knowledge of plant salt tolerance.
